Contractualism

Asks which principles people can justify to one another, especially whether a principle could be reasonably rejected by someone it affects. Individual claims matter in the justification of shared rules.

Disagreement and variation

Reasonable rejection is not identical to bargaining advantage or majority preference; disputes concern how competing individuals’ reasons should be compared. Scanlonian contractualism differs from bargaining-based contractarianism. General duty and equality answers do not establish either theory.
