Violent theocratic extremism · Late 20th century onward

Salafi-Jihadism

A violent religious-political ideology that claims armed struggle is necessary to establish its particular conception of Islamic rule. It makes exclusionary claims about legitimate authority and targets opponents through a militant interpretation rejected by many Muslims.

Reference boundary: Islam, Islamism, Salafism, and Salafi-jihadism are not interchangeable. No commitment to violence or religious supremacy can be inferred from general authority or tradition answers.

Disagreement and variation

Its use of violence and denial of pluralist political standing distinguish it from ordinary religious observance and from nonviolent Salafi currents. Religious identity alone is never evidence of support for this doctrine.
