Left Populism

Frames politics as a conflict between ordinary people and an entrenched elite, combining that opposition with demands for economic equality or redistribution. It claims public institutions should express the people’s collective will.

Reference boundary: Populism is a contested and comparatively thin category. This entry does not equate redistribution, criticism of elites, or socialist politics with authoritarianism.

Disagreement and variation

A claim to represent the authentic people can silence disagreement within that public or weaken independent checks. Economic inclusion and democratic pluralism do not necessarily advance together, and left-populist organizations differ in practice.
